Are you eligible to renew?
You can generally renew if your most recent adult passport:
- Was issued within the last 15 years, when you were 16 or older
- Was a 5-year or 10-year passport
- Is not damaged, lost or stolen
- Has the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier you will use now
If any of these are not true, you will need the new adult application (PPTC 153) instead. Check your route in a minute.
Online vs paper renewal
Some renewals qualify for the online service; others must be submitted on the paper PPTC 054, and cases with tight travel timelines may be better in person. ReadyForm’s short assessment points you to the most likely route and prepares the paper form when that is the right path.
What you need to prepare
- Your most recent passport details (number, issue and expiry dates)
- Two identical passport photos meeting the specification
- The applicable renewal fee
- No guarantor and no references
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a guarantor to renew my passport?
No. The simplified adult renewal does not require a guarantor or references — that is its main advantage over a new application.
Am I eligible for passport renewal?
Generally yes if your most recent adult passport was issued in the last 15 years at age 16+, was a 5- or 10-year passport, is undamaged, and your core details have not changed.
Can I renew my Canadian passport online?
Some renewals qualify for the online service. ReadyForm’s assessment indicates whether you likely qualify for online, paper, or in-person renewal.
What if I am not eligible to renew?
You will need to submit a new adult passport application (PPTC 153) instead. ReadyForm routes you to the correct form automatically.
